The Best Budget Dell G15 5510 Gaming Laptop Review in 2023
Dell G15 5510 is Dell’s mid-range of gaming laptops. So you don’t get all the bells and whistles of the Alienware top-end range. But as you look at this machine, they have started to draw from the Alienware legend design.
This series replaces the G3 and G5. They will run from entry-level to quite high-end specifications with both Intel and AMD processors available. Dell G15 is a value-oriented gaming laptop.
Design
It’s got a very unusual color, and it looks almost like a granite effect. So it looks a little bit like the lunar light Alienware but with the little flex in there. Now the good thing about this laptop is, it doesn’t show any fingerprints.
It will hold up quite well, which is quite nice for this model. The laptop also looks nice because it’s not usually boring black or grey; it is something different.
The laptop has a plastic chassis, but it’s solid and feels very solid in your hands.
On the top of the lid, you get Dell Logo, and a bit riffed effect on the top cover, which is quite nice and makes it easy to grab the laptop.
Despite the all-plastic design, the build quality was decent. There are two different finishes phantom grey with speckles or Spectre green with speckles.
You can see the speckled finish if you look closer. It’s a much nicer feeling compared to previous Dell G series gaming laptops.
The laptop alone weighs 2.6 kilos or 5.8 pounds. It comes with a large 240-watt power brick and cables, weighing 3.7 kilos or 8.1 pounds.
But the lower-spec 3050 and 3050 Ti models have a small 180-watt brick. The 3060 model is 2 millimeters thicker than those 3050 versions.
Now that G15 is the midrange, so you don’t get all the flashy LED lights all over it. It is just a plastic build and looks great. You can open the lid easily with one finger.
There is some flex in the interior, which is expected from an all-plastic machine, but it is solid enough during normal use.
Likewise, there’s a bit of flex to the plastic lid, and while doing this, you will notice that the rubber feet underneath aren’t too grippy.
Underneath is clean, and we’ve just got some air exhaust vents towards the back.
Display
This G15 has a 15.6-inch 1080P 120 hertz panel, but there’s also a better 165-hertz option. The low-end 120-hertz screen has free sync. The color gamut is extremely low.
The game still looked fine enough but look elsewhere if you’re doing colorwork like photo editing.
The screen is at least just able to get about 250 nits of maximum brightness and 66 percent sRGB.
Overall, they are good enough for indoor usage, and the viewing angles are fine. It is still dim for outdoor use.
Performance
You get the new AMD Ryzen 7 5800H and the RTX 3060 graphics. Unfortunately, the RTX 3060 is the highest graphics card you can put in this G15 range at the moment.
It comes with 16 gigabytes of DDR4 RAM and 512 gigabytes of SSD storage.
The Ryzen 7 5800H delivers performance as expected. It is pretty much in line with any other laptop featuring the same chip.
For gaming, you can expect really good frame rates at 1080P high or ultra settings in various games, making full use of a 120-hertz display.
You get more nice frame rates in the 165-hertz display.
Despite being RTX 3060, ray tracing performance is pretty great as well. It is being able to hit above 60 frames per second easily and even quite a lot higher.
The Dell G15 has a high throttle limit. The fan noise was fine and it was not that loud. You can run the intense games but there can be issues with cooling. Dell G15 does not have G-sync.
Keyboard
The keyboard has one zone of orange backlighting. The keys still have orange accenting it even with the lighting off. But there is a four-zone RGB option too.
All keys and secondary functions all lit up, and there are two levels of key brightness that can be controlled with the F5 shortcut key.
You will not have any problems while typing. By default, the keyboard backlighting times out after 10 seconds and turns off, but you can adjust between these levels.
There are also vents at the back and above the keyboard.
The precision touchpad is made up of plastic, and it worked all right. The palm rest has the same sort of granite sort of finish plastic as the rest of the laptop, and it’s got quite a solid feel to it. The touchpads feel okay, and the gestures work fine.
The keyboard is your typical G series full layout keyboard with backlit. You get standard media keys across the top.
Connectivity
The left side has an exhaust vent, 2.5 gigabit Ethernet port, a 3.5-millimeter audio combo jack, and battery charge status LED. The right side has two USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A ports. There is an exhaust vent on this side also.
It’s important to note that this seems to only be for the RTX 3060 model. The 3050 and 3050 Ti versions have older and slower USB 2.0.
So that is something to be aware of if you get a lower-spec model. The back has two air exhaust vents towards the corner.
Battery
This G15 has the larger six-cell 86 watt-hour battery inside. The battery life from the larger battery is extremely impressive. You get 12 hours of battery life by running youtube videos.
You’ve got the option of using Optimus for better battery life. You can also disable it through the BIOS for better performance in games. But there’s no software support for changing this at this time.
Speakers
There are two speakers on the bottom towards the left and towards the right side. They sound average for a gaming laptop, not too bad with some little bass but a bit muffled at higher volume.
Webcam
There’s a 720P camera above the screen in the middle, and it offers Windows Hello. The camera and inbuild microphone are good enough for zoom calling or meeting.
Conclusion
Overall, the G15 is a nice improvement over the older G series laptops. The design and build quality are decent, considering it’s all plastic.
The main reason the Dell G15 is competitive is that they added the MUX switch. Without the MUX switch, the gaming performance would probably be a step lower.
